Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James on Saturday responded to an increase in hate speech on Twitter after Elon Musk acquired the platform on Thursday.

James responded to a report by Drew Harwell, Taylor Lorenz and Kat Zakrzewski Washington Post, which detailed the findings of a research group known as the Network Infection Research Institute. NCRI says N-word use on Twitter increased nearly 500 percent in the 12 hours after Musk took office.

LeBron tweeted the following, urging Musk and Twitter to take the information seriously.

LeBron James @King James

I don’t know Elon Musk and I certainly could care less who owns Twitter. But I will say that if it is true, I hope he and his people take it very seriously, because this is scary AF. So many damn misfits saying hate speech is free speech. https://t.co/Sy0jvXIBnC

of CNN Donnie O’Sullivan and Claire Duffy reported Thursday that Musk has completed a $44 billion deal to buy Twitter.

Musk, the 51-year-old South African-born CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been outspoken about his support for free speech, prompting some Twitter users to bring back prominent banned accounts such as . to the former President of the United States, Donald Trump, who was removed from the platform in 2021 after the January 6 Capitol uprising “due to the risk of inciting further violence.”

It has also led to questions about whether accounts banned for racist rhetoric will be reinstated, or whether accounts using racist language will be allowed to continue to do so.

In response to questions about the future of Twitter, Musk said that a content moderation board will be created.

Twitter will form a content moderation board with widely varying viewpoints.

No major content decisions or account resets will take place until that board meeting.

Musk also noted that no decision has been made regarding a possible recovery of the accounts, nor any changes have been made to the platform’s content moderation policy.

James is considered one of the greatest athletes of all time and has 52.3 million followers on Twitter, making him one of the most influential users on the platform.

Regardless of Musk’s plans for Twitter, he will no doubt be informed of LeBron’s concerns after he takes over.
